For the twentieth time, the whole of Czechia will see that science does not have to be the preserve of researchers in laboratories. The last Friday in September will once again belong to Researchers’ Night at Mendel University in Brno, the largest popularization event of its kind, this time with the subtitle Wealth. The organizers also refer to the 700th anniversary of the minting of the first Czech gold coins. Visitors can look forward to interactive experiments, workshops, demonstrations, and tastings. The event program is free of charge.
“As usual, we will welcome visitors of all ages to our Brno campus. They will be able to learn about the diverse forest ecosystem, the world of animals and plants, and discover the wealth of flavors and aromas of fruit from the garden. This year’s program is very diverse, and we believe that everyone will find a topic that interests them,” said Filip Červinka, coordinator of Researchers’ Night at Mendel University in Brno.
In recent years, public libraries and innovation and education centers have also been participating in Researchers’ Night. The largest program offering has long been provided by public universities, which also coordinate the entire Researchers’ Night. Since the beginning of the event, observatories and planetariums, science centers, and the Czech Academy of Sciences have also enriched the program.
A major change is planned for 2026, when Researchers’ Night will be renamed Science Night. “The planned name change reflects both the social demand for a gender-neutral name and the conviction of the organizers that the change in the name of the event does not alter its character and long-term mission, which is to promote science and research in all its forms,” explained Dana Kardová from the national organizing team of Researchers’ Night.
A total of 11 institutions are participating in Brno’s Researchers’ Night, with branches located throughout the city. Last year, the event attracted more than 100,000 visitors across the Czech Republic, and this year it will expand to another 18 cities and towns. The Czech Researchers’ Night is once again part of European Researchers’ Night, a Europe-wide event supported by the European Union with the aim of connecting science and society and increasing young people’s interest in science. European Researchers’ Night takes place in 23 countries, with the Czech Researchers’ Night being the largest in terms of scope. This year, Researchers’ Night was supported by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports and the Marie Skłodowska Curie Actions program with the METAMORPHOSIS project under the HORIZON-MSCA-2023-CITIZENS-01 call.
