The academic community of Mendel University in Brno has received the sad news of the passing of Emeritus Rector Stanislav Procházka, who died shortly before his 85th birthday. During his tenure as rector, the University Information System was introduced, the Institute of Lifelong Learning was established, and the University of the Third Age was launched. At that time, all study programs were adjusted according to the ECTS system, and the Internal Grant Agency of MZLU in Brno was founded.

“With deep sorrow, we received the news of the passing of Stanislav Procházka, the 28th rector of our university and an internationally respected expert in plant physiology. His work and vision left an indelible mark on the history of our alma mater, influencing many generations of students and the entire academic community. We will remember him as an inspiring leader, a dedicated scientist, and a great colleague. May he rest in peace,” said the university’s rector, Jan Mareš.

“A great man has left us—Professor Procházka, Emeritus Rector of Mendel University in Brno, a giant of science, a leader in higher education, an exceptional organizer with a significant international impact, a promoter of Mendel University’s good name, and a representative of one of the oldest scientific schools in our country. It is as if a majestic tree has fallen—leaving an empty space behind,” said Ladislav Havel, Emeritus Rector, colleague, and former head of the Institute of Plant Biology.

Stanislav Procházka served as rector a total of four times, from 1986 to 1991 and from 2000 to 2006. He was twice vice-rector and once vice-dean of the Faculty of Agronomy. In 2004, the Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra awarded him an honorary doctorate. In 2019, he received a medal for his long-term and successful service to Mendel University in Brno. In 2023, he was granted the title of emeritus professor.
