Lecture highlighted the risks of grapevine flavescence dorée for Czech viticulture

12. 2. 2026

At a professional lecture, participants were introduced to the issue of the quarantine phytoplasma grapevine flavescence dorée (Grapevine flavescence dorée phytoplasma, GFDP), which represents a significant risk to Czech viticulture. The lecture provided a comprehensive overview of its biology, epidemiology, prevention, and the current situation of its occurrence in the Czech Republic.

Particular attention was paid to the current status within the Czech Republic and to possible measures for preventing the spread of this dangerous pathogen. Experts pointed out that although the phytoplasma is already present in the country, it has not yet spread epidemically. For this reason, it is now crucial to focus on preventive measures in vineyards and on strict control of the possible introduction of more aggressive phytoplasma strains from abroad.

The lecture emphasized the importance of early diagnosis of the phytoplasma, eradication of reservoir plants and the grapevine leafhopper (Scaphoideus titanus) in vineyards, and increasing growers’ awareness as key tools for protecting vineyards and ensuring the sustainability of domestic wine production.
