Doctoral study programmes represent the highest level of university degree programmes. Doctoral study can be applied for after previous successful completion of bachelor’s and follow-up master’s study programme. Study at MENDELU Faculty of Horticulture is open for all graduates from relevant or similar master’s study programmes who demonstrate interest and aptitude for scientific work in academic or research institutions, or for highly expert work in commercial corporations.
The main aim of study in doctoral study programmes is therefore the education of a student as a scientist, which is supported by expert training in a relatively narrowly specialised area. The standard length of study in doctoral study programmes at MENDELU Faculty of Horticulture is four years. The content of study issues from an approved learning plan. The student closely cooperates with their tutor, who further defines the individual activities of the student. In the first three years of doctoral study, a student sits competence exams, defends the theses and state of advancement of their dissertation. They also publish their first research papers. In the last year the student focuses on completing the doctoral thesis, passing the state doctoral exam, and defence of their dissertation. After a successful defence he or she receives the academic title of a doctor (abbreviated as Ph.D. after the name).
The doctoral degree course can be studied on a full-time or part-time basis. In the full-time form of study the student regularly attends their training workplace. Besides delivering duties issuing from their learning plan (involvement in organised teaching and other organised events) they may be given also various pedagogical or other related tasks contributing to the operation of the department. During the course of the study, a full-time doctoral student receives a monthly bursary (stipend).
In the part-time form of study the student is not require to regularly attend the training workplace, but participates in organised teaching, consulting and other events related to the delivery of their learning plan and complying with the instructions of their tutor.
