In January of this year, Prof. Ing. Fedor Malík, DrSc., a distinguished educator, enologist, biotechnologist, and wine ambassador throughout Central Europe, celebrated his significant milestone birthday.
Born on January 11, 1945, in Bratislava, he pursued secondary education in Modra before studying at the Faculty of Chemical Technology at SVŠT in Bratislava from 1962 to 1967. He continued his doctoral studies at the same faculty, focusing on pure cultures of wine yeast. His dissertation, “Study of Yeast Biomass Propagation for Winemaking Technology,” earned him the CSc. degree in 1973. In 1978, he completed a higher education pedagogy program for SVŠT teachers. He defended his Doctor of Science (DrSc.) degree in 1997, and two years later, he was appointed Professor. Until 2018, he served at the Department of Biotechnology, Faculty of Chemical and Food Technology, STU.
Prof. Malík’s scientific and professional contributions are extensive. He was involved in wine yeast research, studying the relationship between yeast vitality and lipid composition, as well as biological regulation processes in grape must fermentation. He collaborated with numerous international commissions, served on scientific boards, editorial boards, and participated in state examination committees. His research has been widely published in scientific papers, professional books, monographs, and university study materials. He has also presented his findings at both domestic and international conferences and symposia.
Throughout his career, Prof. Malík has received numerous prestigious national and international awards. His enthusiasm and dedication to the field remain unwavering. As an emeritus professor, he continues to collaborate with the Faculty of Horticulture at Mendel University in Brno and other research institutions in the Czech Republic. Since 2010, he has been a mentor at his family winery, Fedor Malík a syn s.r.o., where he applies his lifelong expertise and enological philosophy.
Prof. Fedor Malík is a key figure in the development of viticulture and winemaking. On behalf of the academic and scientific community, as well as the wider professional and public audience, we wish him good health and continued vitality for many more years to come.
