High School Students Tried University Life Firsthand: Faculty of Horticulture Hosted “University Student for 2 Days” Event

13. 3. 2026

What is it like to study at a university? That is exactly what high school students had the opportunity to experience during the “University Student for 2 Days” event, organized by the Faculty of Horticulture at Mendel University in Brno, in Lednice. Over the course of two days, participants briefly became real university students—they attended classes, visited laboratories, and explored both the faculty environment and student life.

The program was designed to introduce participants to various fields of study offered by the Faculty of Horticulture. The first day began with an introductory meeting and division into groups, followed by a tour of the Lednice castle park. Students then took part in expert sessions and workshops covering different areas such as horticulture, viticulture, garden architecture, and laboratory work.

During the day, they visited the central laboratory, attended classes focused on integrated plant protection, dendrology, and garden design, and also gained insight into work carried out in academic gardens and laboratory facilities. The program also included a walk through the academic garden and the garden labyrinth.

The second day continued with additional practical and theoretical sessions. Participants, for example, tried aquaponics and learned more about plant cultivation, nursery production, and landscape architecture.

The aim of the event was to give high school students a realistic picture of a typical day in the life of a university student and to help them make decisions about their future studies. In addition to attending classes, they had the opportunity to explore the faculty environment, meet current students, and ask any questions they had about studying.

The “University Student for 2 Days” event thus offered participants a unique opportunity to experience university life firsthand—before submitting their applications.

We would like to thank all participants and instructors who contributed to the program. We believe that students took away not only new experiences, but also inspiration for their future studies.
